In the modern world, we often try to squeeze human attraction into boxes labeled by psychology or sociology. We talk about "orientation" as if it were a recent discovery of the mind. But in the ancient science of Jyotish: Vedic astrology: we look much deeper. We look at the karmic signature written in the stars at the moment of birth.
To understand unconventional unions, we have to start with a fundamental spiritual truth: the Atman, or the soul, has no gender. It is neither male nor female. It is pure consciousness. Gender is a layer of the Sukshma Sharira, the subtle body, and the physical container we inhabit for a brief moment in time. When we discuss LGBT identities through the lens of Jyotish, we aren't looking for "afflictions" or "modern trends." We are looking at how certain planetary forces allow the soul to express itself outside the rigid binary of the householder tradition.
The Neuter Force: Budha and Shani
In the Vedic scheme, planets are assigned genders. The Sun and Mars are masculine. The Moon and Venus are feminine. But there are two planets that sit outside this duality: Budha (Mercury) and Shani (Saturn). They are classified as Napumsaka or neuter planets.
Mercury is the eternal adolescent, the "Prince." He is fluid, adaptable, and reflects the nature of whatever planet he joins. Mercury is the mirror. When Mercury heavily influences the houses of desire or partnership, the individual’s attractions often become fluid or unconventional. He is the planet of "experimentation" because he isn’t bound by the heavy biological drive to procreate in the traditional sense. He seeks mental connection and variety.
Saturn, on the other hand, represents the "old" neuter force. He is cold, distant, and restrictive. While Mercury brings fluidity, Saturn brings a sense of being "other." In many charts of those who identify as asexual or who find themselves in unions that completely ignore social norms, Saturn is the dominant force. He creates a boundary that the rest of society finds difficult to cross.
The Outlaw Nodes: Rahu and Ketu
If Mercury and Saturn provide the "neuter" foundation, Rahu and Ketu provide the "unconventional" spark. Rahu is the North Node, the head of the demon. He is the ultimate rule-breaker. Rahu represents everything that is foreign, taboo, or "out of the box." When Rahu influences the 7th house (partnerships) or the 12th house (private pleasures), the soul is pushed toward experiences that challenge the status quo.
Rahu doesn't care about tradition. He doesn't care about what the neighbors think. He wants to experience the "forbidden." For many, this manifests as attraction to the same gender or a rejection of the standard marriage model.
Ketu, the South Node, is the tail. He is the planet of detachment and "the closet." Ketu represents things that are hidden or things we are trying to move past from previous lives. A Mercury-Ketu conjunction, for example, can indicate a very deep, internal world where one’s attractions are kept secret or are so refined that the physical world can barely contain them. It often points to a person who feels detached from the traditional roles of "husband" or "wife."
The Houses of the Hidden and the Private
In Jyotish, we don't just look at the planets; we look at where they live.
- The 7th House: This is the primary house of partnership. If this house is ruled by Mercury or Saturn, or if Rahu is sitting there, the "contract" of partnership is likely to be unconventional.
- The 8th House: This is the house of secrets and deep, transformative alchemy. It rules the private parts of the body and the hidden side of our desires. When the 8th house is active, the individual’s sexuality is often a source of great personal transformation, often kept away from the public eye.
- The 12th House: This is the house of "the closet." It is the house of isolation, the bedroom, and liberation (Moksha). It represents the private world we build for ourselves. If the 12th house is strong, the person may find their greatest fulfillment in private, unconventional unions that the world never sees.
When we see combinations involving these houses, we aren't seeing a "problem." We are seeing a specific karmic path that requires the individual to navigate life without the "safety net" of traditional social approval.
Specific Planetary Combinations
There are specific signatures in a birth chart that often point toward unconventional attractions. One of the most common is the Venus-Saturn exchange or conjunction. Venus (Shukra) is the planet of love and beauty. When the cold, unconventional hand of Saturn touches Venus, it can delay traditional marriage or turn the heart toward partners that society deems "inappropriate." This is not a lack of love, but a hardening of the heart against "normal" expectations.
We also look at the 4th and 9th houses. These houses represent our inner emotional balance and our relationship with tradition/the father. If the 4th house (the heart) is heavily influenced by "masculine" planets in a female chart, or "feminine" planets in a male chart, the inner balance of the male and female principles (Shiva and Shakti) is tilted. This creates a "subtle body" that identifies more with the opposite gender than the physical one.
A Mercury-Ketu conjunction in the 12th house is another powerful indicator. This combination often points to a soul that has spent many lifetimes as different genders and has now reached a point where the physical gender of a partner matters far less than the soul-connection.
Beyond Modern Psychology: The Ancient Tradition
It is a mistake to think that these concepts are "new" or "Western." Our ancient texts are full of figures who broke the gender binary. In the Mahabharata, we have the story of Shikhandi, who was born female but became male to fulfill a karmic destiny. We have Arjuna, the great warrior, who spent a year living as Brihannala, a member of the third gender, teaching dance and music in the royal courts.
These stories aren't just myths; they are teachings on the fluidity of the soul. The ancient rishis understood that the Prana (life force) doesn't always flow in the directions the "priests" might prefer. They recognized the Tritiya Prakriti, or the "Third Nature."
In Jyotish, we respect this nature. We don't try to "fix" a Mercury-dominated chart to make it look like a Sun-dominated one. That would be a violation of the individual's Dharma. The goal of the spiritual path isn't to be "normal"; it's to be authentic to the karmic signature you were born with.
The Soul Has No Gender
Ultimately, attraction is driven by the subtle body. When two people are drawn to each other, it is often because their Samskaras (past-life impressions) are vibrating at the same frequency. If a man is drawn to a man, or a woman to a woman, it is the subtle bodies communicating, bypassing the physical hardware of the current incarnation.
Saturn may demand that we live in the "closet" for a time to learn discipline or to understand the weight of social pressure. Rahu may demand that we scream our truth from the rooftops to break down the walls of a stagnant society. Mercury may simply want us to play, to explore, and to realize that "he" and "she" are just labels we use until we are ready to return to the One.
When we stop viewing unconventional unions through the lens of "right or wrong" and start seeing them as the interplay of planetary energies, we move closer to true spiritual integrity. We realize that the universe is far more diverse and creative than our small human rules allow for.
If your path is unconventional, it isn't because you are "broken." It’s because your chart: the map of your soul's journey: has called for a different kind of mirror. Whether that mirror is held by Mercury, Saturn, or Rahu, the goal remains the same: to find the divine within the union, and to eventually transcend even the union itself to find the genderless peace of the Atman.
